This lovely little import which recently arrived here from Sweden can be described as the anti-"Twilight." No glittery vampires here. Just blood-suckers behaving as you would expect a creature that crawls out of its crypt at night to suck human blood to behave: creepy and gruesome.
But that description doesn't begin to do this movie justice. It is at its base a love story. Without exposing too many details (because I don't want to spoil any of the surprises) I'll divulge the barest of the plot: the story, set in Sweden in the dead of winter, revolves around Oskar- a meek, withdrawn 12 year old boy, who gets bandied about by his divorced parents, and succumbs to ruthless bullying on the playground because he doesn't have the gumption to fight back. In steps Eli- a peculiar yet striking little girl just his age- whose father escorts her out of a cab one snowy night into their recently rented apartment, then mysteriously precedes to board up the windows. Eli and Oskar meet on the playground at night; she is reluctant to be his friend, but they discover after several meeetings that they share isolation and desperate loneliness and a need for one another's companionship. Eli provides Oskar the strength to face the problems in his life, and Oskar in turn provides the love and support that Eli is lacking in her very sad, isolated existence and- despite all the unlikeliness and the obstacles to a relationship between them- the two form a deep undertsanding and an unwavering committment towards one another. The movie is at once captivating, moody, atmospheric, sad, hilarious, touching and extremely unsettling for a lot of reasons that I can't go into without spoiling it.
It's not playing in a lot of places, but if you are a horror movie fan and you find that it's playing at your local area, you definitely need to catch a showing. I'm sure you'll be pleasantly surprised by it.
