Force Feeding annorexics....a part of treatment?

  Author:  56297  Category:(Debate) Created:(12/2/2008 7:10:00 PM)

Annorexia effects approximately 1% of female adolescents. This is not counting males, and adult victims. The mortality rate is also 5% to 8% for this hard to treat disorder. Contrary to many people's beliefs; annorexia is a mental illnes..it is not a product of vanity or the victim being shallow.

This brings me to the point of the debate. It is found that many patients who undergo treatment are force fed through nago-gastric tubes. Normally medical treatment cannot be administered without a patient's consent but people with mental illness are not considered to be able to make the proper judgements.

In one way; I can see how this would help for someone who absolutely refuses to eat. But I see this as more problematic rather than beneficial.

For instance; people with annorexia and bulimia fear gaining weight, and fear not being in control of what goes into their bodies. Thus if they expect to get force fed, they will be less likely to seek treatment. And thus increasing the mortality rate for this dangerous disorder.

Also, force feeding is a very short term solution to the problem and does not treat the underlying medical and mental problems. It does not get rid of the fear of food, weight, and hospital situations.

Lastly, force feeding is risky especailly in someone who is not willingly being force fed. Force feeding can result in a reduction of phosphates in the blood which eventually lead to heart failure.

So basically..I think that if a person is going to undergo naso-gastral feeding it should only be done with their consent.

Date: 12/2/2008 7:40:00 PM  From Authorid: 7830    Anorexia ia caused by underlying root problems. force feeding would only temporarily treat a symptom, not the root. No good if you ask me.
Date: 12/2/2008 8:35:00 PM  From Authorid: 17081    I think guilt is part of it. They feel guilty if they eat one bite. Maybe being straight up with them. Tell them you know what youre doing and it is gonna kill you and take them to places where they have to eat.
Date: 12/3/2008 5:37:00 AM  From Authorid: 62983    ^^Most anorexics know what they are doing could possibly kill them. However it is a cycle that continues, guilt being one of the driving factors in the illness one of other's is control or lack of it. There are many things that can trigger this illness, and once the cycle starts it is an endless roller coaster similar to an addiction.

From the many documentaries and articles that I have read, it seems that when someone goes in for treatment willingly or unwillingly they are monitored and encouraged to eat by counselors, in a non life threatening situation they are not "force fed". Force feeding is done usually when it is warranted medically.

Date: 12/3/2008 5:50:00 AM  From Authorid: 62983    It's a very private and lonely disorder and unfortunately taking them around food does not encourage them to eat, that does the opposite actually. By the time someone has picked out the restaurant, the anorexic person would have already thought of a way of coping with being at a restaurant and knowing how much of something they may be able to get away with eating or not. It's not as simple as taking them out to eat and telling them that they are killing themselves.

For a better understanding of this illness/disorder you should have a look at the HBO documentary called "THIN". It focuses on a group of young ladies that are in treatment, and it allows the viewer to see the illness from their perspective.

Date: 12/3/2008 8:45:00 AM  From Authorid: 38601    As someone who has been anorexic on and off for years, I can not see the point of force feeding. You hit a certain point where your body starts rejecting the food, and force feeding merely exacerbates this. Also, I hit a point where, to even drink water, my mouth was burning. Force Feeding would almost become a form of torture. Anorexia, bulimia, and other eating disorders are psychological problems. The mental and emotional issues need to be addressed if you want to see a change in the physical.
Date: 12/3/2008 2:38:00 PM  From Authorid: 45630    Is their any way that this could be done only to give people enough strength to undergo proper treatment?
Date: 12/3/2008 2:52:00 PM  From Authorid: 1631    If a person is opting not to take in enough nutrition or liquids to remain healthy, the medical community has no other recourse but to supplement them either intravenously or with feeding tubes.

It would go against any hospital's ethics to just sit back and allow a person to kill themselves, because that is exactly what people with this disorder are doing. The medical staff has an obligation to save people's lives and in this case it would be considered a medical necessity to force feed these patients.
