I never thought the day would come, nor did I want it to. My wife and I encountered what could only be described as a ghost. We were camping at Columbine Campground. This campgound is located just 1 mile west of Central City, Colorado - the famous goldrush town founded in 1859. To get to the campgound, you pass through 3 graveyards just outside of town.
It was a beautiful day on the 9th of September in the year 1992. We had planned to stay that night and head for home the following morning. That evening, some people in the campground were irate over some missing firewood and we felt the situation was getting out of hand, so we left just after sundown. The road from the campground is very rutted so we were driving out at about 10 miles an hour. We were about 500 ft from the gaveyards. Just ahead of where my headlights shown on the ground, I saw what looked like an animal right in the middle of the road - stopped. It looked like it had white hair, but as soon as it was in my headlights I knew it was something I had never seen before. There in front of my Jeep, hovering about 2 feet off the road, was a somewhat round and white dense object. It had an unsual glow to it. Light from my Jeep shown though some parts of it so as to see the ground on the other side while other parts were solid. It was NOT dust. I have driven these dirt roads for 22 years and I know dust clouds when I see them. It had well defined edges and the shape never changed. There was no one else on the road and there was no wind. It was not a cloud (elevation is about 9000ft here), this was a very clear night.
As light from my Jeep struct the thing it suddenly moved to the side of the road and ABRUPTLY stopped for a few seconds. As I got closer (about 20ft from it), it abruptly began moving up the road cut, all the while staying about 2 feet off the ground. At about 5 feet up the cut, it completely faded out in the time span of 1 second, leaving no trace. It was just liked a light would be extinguished.
I was left with a strange feeling of bewilderment, because I could not identify the object and because of the way it moved with purpose. I was ready to dismiss this as "seeing things" when I looked at my wife. She had a strange look to her. I asked her if she had seen something, and she said "I wasn't going to say anything but since you mentioned it, yes." She went on to describe exactly what I had seen. WHOA!.
I went back to the spot 1 week later. I found that off the lower part of the road about 30ft, was the remains of well. Spring water was welling up and over the ancient bricks. I then headed up the road cut where the object was going. There was just the slightest hint of a long unused trail. This trail lead to the remains of a miners cabin. There was scarcely a foundation left and some rusted mining equipment. Was this object just dust or the spritual remains of a miner going for a cool drink of spring water? You decide.
In closing I will just say that it's the first thing in my 40 years that I had seen that I could not explain given the way it purposely moved, stopped, changed direction and under the conditions that it existed.
