That Fateful Night

It was a humid spring night in texas, and I had opened my bedroom window just a bit to enjoy the mild breeze that was blowing. I had just drifted off to sleep, or so it seemed, when i was awaken by the sound of a siren in the distance. This was nothing new to me, since I live only a couple of blocks away from a nursing home and sadly, ambulance calls are a regular occurance there. Sitting straight up in my bed, I listened as the sirens got louder and louder, finally shutting off nearby. I said aloud a little prayer (something I NEVER had done before or since) "Dear Lord, please watch over the person that ambulance is intended for. Keep them and their family safe in your embrace. Amen". Restlessly, I laid back down on my pillow, tossing and turning until my husband returned home from his 2nd shift job. As my husband prepared for bed, he took off his ring and his watch, laying them on the nightstand. The watch had belonged to my brother until a few days prior to this night. My brother had found himself in a financial bind once again, and had offered his watch to my husband for a bargain, with the understanding that once he was back on his feet financially, my husband would let him buy it back. We hadn't been asleep long when the phone rang. I could tell by the tone of my husband's voice that something was wrong. He rose, turned on the light, placed his hands on my shoulders and broke the news that my brother had just been killed. He had been struck and killed by a car while walking down the road, just a half a mile from my house. The sirens that I had heard only minutes earlier were on their way to try and save my only brother. While dressing the next morning to visit the funeral home, my husband noticed that his watch (my brother's watch) had stopped working. The watch face had fogged over, and has not worked to this very day.
