My mother use to tell us about seeing her father up at the cottage. The cottage was just west of Ottawa and had a beautiful view of the Laurentian Mountains across the Bay. For years if anything went wrong, we would always say that it was Grandpa. He didnt believe a cottage should have indoor plumbing or telephones. If you wanted a home you stayed home, if you wanted to get back to nature.. the cottage should be set differently. He had passed away when we were all young, and the cottage was left to my mother and her three brothers. So every summer we would go and spend time there. Eventually my parents bought out her brothers share and began to build on to the original cottage. And yes, when things went wrong..it was blamed on grandpa (*smile). As years went by our family grew up... and I had a daughter of my own. We stayed in the upstairs "victorian" room, named for the old furniture in there, one summer when she was about 3, she let out a scream! My mother and father had been in the next room, both came running to see what had happened "A Man, she cried, "looked down at us" (she was sleeping in the double bed with me) looked at mommy and went through her", she said . She wouldnt go back to sleep, so we had to turn on the light in the hall way for her that night. The next morning as we walked down the stairs, I held her close to me when she turned to look up into a high cabinet. "thats him" she cried, "thats the man". She was staring at a picture of my grandfather, tucked off to the side of the cabinet. I dont recall her ever having seen a picture of her great grandfather before and had not even noticed that one until she called out. How it changed my life:Not that it has changed my life, but just made me more aware that life can go on.. even when you are not physically there. And you can continue spiritually even when your body is gone.
