I've always been kind of accident prone. It was worse beginning the summer before my senior year of high school. In June of 1996, I was at a summer camp in the Missouri Ozarks on the Gasconade river. One Saturday some friends of mine decided to float the river, even though it had flooded the week before. We left at about 5 pm and planned to float about 18 miles. Even though the river was fast, it was well after dark by the time we got to our pickup point, and the moon wasn't out that night. It was pitch black, but we could barely see the bridge where we were going to get out when the guys in the canoe ahead of us yelled back to beware of a fallen tree in the water. The current pulled us sideways into the tree and rolled the canoe over. I hit the water, was sucked under the canoe, and into the submerged branches of the tree. One branch went through the back of my t-shirt, and the fast-moving water stretched it to where I couldn't get it free. When I was under the water, it seemed that there was some sort of glow that was allowing me to see the outlines of the tree branches, even though it! was pitch black above water. Somehow, my t-shirt came undone from the branch and I was able to get my head above water before I passed out. We were picked up by our friends and taken back to camp. When we got there, my mother was upset. She had been in her cabin reading, and at about 10:15 had been struck by a horrible feeling of dread and had begun praying. 10:15 was approximately the time when my canoe hit the tree and I was caught underwater. Later that same year, I was on my way to the grocery store to get food for dinner. I was driving my 1991 Ford Explorer on I-70 in Blue Springs, Missouri, when I lost control and rolled three times. I should have died, but I came out with only one bruise and some minor cuts. I believe I have an angel or some other higher power that watches over me. In a (possibly) related happening, I've noticed lately that when I walk around at night, whenever I walk near a street light, it goes out. Just blinks right off. I can't explain it, and I don't know anybody who can, so if anyone knows what's going on, I'd like to hear your theories. How it changed my life:I feel I have a special guardian who keeps me out of the trouble I'm so good at getting myself into. I wish I knew who the poor soul is.
